Entertainment Weekly reports that Lightyear released its first teaser trailer today, starring Chris Evans as the famous Buzz Lightyear. But he won’t be playing the Buzz audiences know from Toy Story, rather “the original Buzz Lightyear.”
Angus MacLane, the director of the upcoming film, explains that this is a story about Buzz Lightyear’s origin story as the space ranger, not the toy. From the Toy Story franchise, Buzz, as voiced by Tim Allen, is a toy based on the Buzz of a popular sci-fi franchise, captain of the Universe Protection Unit of the Space Ranger corps from the Intergalactic Alliance. Last year in December, Lightyear was first announced with Evans in the starring voice role and Pixar revealed that it will be the origin story for that character instead of Toy Story’s Buzz.
Though Evan’s Buzz and Allen’s Buzz aren’t necessarily the same character, there will be other things in the film that connect the two. Buzz Lightyear’s iconic spacesuit that appears in the trailer and his famous catchphrase, “To infinity and beyond”, will both be recurring motifs. The trailer cut off the catchphrase until Evans could finish the line, a move Disney most likely borrowed from the Avengers movies, which also cut off Evan’s Captain America from officially saying “Avengers, assemble!” until Endgame.
At its core, Lightyear is meant to be an epic sci-fi movie. MacLane wants audiences to experience the kind of sci-fi movies he grew up watching from 1977-91, like Star Wars, but with “more modern sensibilities.” The opening scene of the trailer introduces a scene of Buzz locking into a rocket, powered by an unknown crystallized energy source that shoots him around the sun without getting burned.
Lightyear is scheduled for release on June 17, 2022. Be sure to check out the trailer below!
