Rumors have been swirling around if director James Gunn is leaving the Marvel Universe for some time with no clear indication of if the rumors are true or not. He directed the first two installments of the Guardians of the Galaxy, then was fired from the third film after the resurfacing of offensive tweets back in 2018. Since being reinstated as director of Guardians 3, things have not always been such smooth sailing between him and Marvel. Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy films, stood by Gunn during the Twitter scandal and said he wouldn’t make another Guardians film without Gunn and vise versa.
Gunn hints at his future plans in an interview with The New York Times. So, the question is, do fans get an answer about his plans with Marvel? Possibly.
“I have no clue what I’m going to do. For me, Guardians 3 is probably the last one. I don’t know about doing it again. I do find; because of the ability to do different stuff in the DC multiverse, it’s fun. They’re starting to really resemble their comic books,” said Gunn to The New York Times. “The Marvel Universe has always been a little more cohesive, and DC has always had more great single runs. They had The Dark Knight Returns. They had Watchmen. They had The Killing Joke. They had Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing. The fact that they did Joker, which is a totally different type of movie, that to me is cool. I’m very excited about Matt’s movie [Matt Reeves’ The Batman]. They’re getting some really good filmmakers involved. They’re always going to be hit or miss — I just don’t want them to get boring.”
When Gunn finishes with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he’s going to go out with a bang leaving his mark on the saga forever. He is also making his mark on DC, with The Suicide Squad arriving in theaters and on HBO Max this August.
