It looks like we have another musician biopic on our hands, and this time, we’re going to get a look at the life of the legendary soul singer, Marvin Gaye. Menace II Society and Book of Eli director Allen Hughes is set to direct the Warner Bros. film, titled, What’s Going On, which is planning to release in 2023 simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.
What’s Going On is being based on a script from playwright/poet Marcus Gardley, who is also behind the upcoming musical version of The Color Purple. The story behind the new biopic will most likely have some heartwarming moments, but the film will also probably touch on some of the darker events in the singer’s life, especially considering that his life was cut short after being shot and killed by his own father.
The film already has a hefty budget of $80 million, but it doesn’t appear that any cast has been attached yet. What has been attached is a producing team for the film, which includes Dr. Dre, Interscope Records’ Jimmy Iovine and Andrew Lazar.
Almost Famous director Cameron Crowe had tried to get started a Marvin Gaye Biopic under the same name, but it seems that time has passed and he’ll have no involvement in the new film.
