China’s box office had a busy week, with Sony’s Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway opening over the weekend, finishing in second behind Chinese sports drama Never Stop. Never Stop opened just this past Saturday but won the full weekend with $10.2 million.
Peter Rabbit 2, directed by Will Gluck, grossed $7.8 million from Friday to Sunday, with Sony projecting a $11.1 million finish for the full holiday weekend. It is estimated that the sequel will make about $19.9 million, which would be 24 percent behind the original 2018 Peter Rabbit film, which made a total of $26.3 million in China, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Other films that opened include the drama Are You Lonesome Tonight, which opened in third with $6.9 million, including $500,000 on Imax. The film is produced by veteran hitmaker Ning Hao and helmed by newcomer Shi Wenpei. Japanese anime film Hello World grossed $6.3 million opening in fourth place. The film is directed by Tomohiko Itō and produced by Graphinica.
Actor and director Bao Beier’s dramedy Sunny Sisters opened in fifth place with $5.6 million.
Altogether, China’s box office has accumulated $4.14 billion in ticket sales this year, which is 8.9 percent behind their sales in 2019.
