This past week, Netflix released a teaser trailer for Blood Red Sky, a vampire action-horror film that is set aboard a transatlantic flight. It will star Peri Baumeister and is scheduled for release on the streaming platform on July 23 after overcoming production delays due to the pandemic.
The vampire movie, formerly known as Transatlantic 473, was directed and co-written by Peter Thorwarth. He released a short film version of the project back in 2015 with a different cast and crew.
According to Netflix, the synopsis of the film describes that “a woman with a mysterious illness is forced into action when a group of terrorists attempt to hijack a transatlantic overnight flight. In order to protect her son she will have to reveal a dark secret, and unleash the inner monster she has fought to hide.” Netflix hasn’t always focused on horror, but Blood Red Sky’s plot seems to balance the genre of action-thriller alongside its vampiric protagonist (Baumeister).
In the trailer, the hijacking scenes switch between the terrorists insisting that their demands are strictly monetary. But it soon becomes clear that they are willing to shed blood to get what they want and send a message to their hostages. As the situation escalates, the sickly woman realizes that she must shed her human form to save her son and the rest of the hostages. After she leaves her son under the care of someone else, the woman undergoes a harrowing transformation from economy plus passenger to malicious bloodsucker.
Blood Red Sky will also feature another actor known to vampire film lovers: Prison Break’s Dominic Purcell. He also portrayed Drake/Dracula opposite Wesley Snipes in Blade: Trinity. Purcell is one of the film’s terrorists, who is seen responding to his leader’s orders over the plane’s PA system. The leader is not featured in the teaser footage, but per Screen Rant, it is possible that the voice belongs to Atomic Blonde’s Roland Møller.
The film may just be a part of the upcoming vampire film renaissance with 2022 scheduled releases like Mahershala Ali’s Blade reboot and Jared Leto’s Morbius. With luck, Blood Red Sky could be the first of many high-quality, small-budget vampire films that feed the mainstream viewing audience’s appetite for the vampire in the next few years.
