Production has begun for the latest Star Wars movie in the United Kingdom on Thursday. Lucasfilm announced the project’s production, along with a full cast announcement.
Flynn Gray, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams are the newest additions to the cast of Star Wars: Starfighter. They join the previously announced cast, including Ryan Gosling, Mia Goth, and Matt Smith. The film is being directed by Deadpool & Wolverine‘s Shawn Levy, with Gosling playing the starring role, and Goth and Smith portraying villains.
“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter,” Levy said in a statement. “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”
Starfighter is a standalone film in the Star Wars universe, and is not previously connected to previous Star Wars films or characters from the Skywalker Saga, the films following Luke and Anakin Skywalker. But for the sake of following a timeline, the events of Starfighter take place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Gray is a key piece to this cast, as he will star alongside Gosling. The script, written by Jonathan Tropper, has few details, but is said to see Gosling’s character protect a young charge from evildoers in this galaxy-spanning adventure. The actor has appeared in one episode of Netflix’s Wednesday and an Irish crime show, Borderline.
It seems that Adams will portray the boy’s mother. She has previously worked with Levy on his 2009 movie Night at the Museum: Battle for the Smithsonian and starred in the Levy-produced sci-fi drama, Arrival. Lucasfilm did not reveal any plot or character details in the announcement.
Pierre broke out with his role on Netflix’s Rebel Ridge, and did some voice acting work as the king himself in Mufasa: The Lion King. He is also the star of DC Studios’ upcoming show Lanterns.
Bird is best known for The InBetweeners series and movies, and Westman made an appearance in the period mini-series The Essex Serpent. Ings is a star on Guy Ritchie’s crime series, The Gentlemen.
Levy and Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy are producing. Executive producers are Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen, and Josh McLaglen.
Star Wars: Starfighter will release in theaters on May 28, 2027.
