‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’ is A Ridiculously Meta Time – Movie Review

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is the latest film from the great Nicolas Cage. Cage plays a version of himself in the film, referred to as “Nick Cage.” The story follows him as he grapples with his crumbling acting career. After delivering the monologue of his life to a big casting producer, he is inevitably turned down for the role. His loss of status and relevancy drives him into desperation and wishful thinking.

Meanwhile, he tries to sustain his relationship with his daughter and estranged wife, but they are fatigued by Nick’s constant head in the clouds and his inability to consider his daughter’s interests above his own. It’s not until Nick’s agent (Neil Patrick Harris) brings him a million-dollar gig to attend a wealthy superfan’s birthday party in Mallorca, Spain, that Nick’s adventure begins. This wealthy fan, Javi (Pedro Pascal), expresses a deep appreciation for Nick’s body of work that gives Nick an ego boost, knowing he has touched the hearts of others. The film takes a turn when the CIA recruits Nick to spy on Javi, as they suspect he is behind the kidnapping of a young woman. Nick’s purpose of being a hero gives him the boost he’s been looking for.

Nicolas Cage is known for being a monotone actor, playing the same character across each of his roles. However, his versatility has become more notable, especially after his performance in the 2021 film Pig. The movie pokes fun at the criticism regarding Cage’s acting abilities; perhaps it even reinforces these ideas in a genius way where Cage can laugh at himself. While the movie is fictional and ridiculous in the best possible way, it does lend its time to exploring the ways actors and other artists experience dry seasons within their careers. Nick knows his potential as an actor, but with his inconsistent opportunities and friction with his family, his solution is to retire.

There are many great comedic beats throughout the movie. One of which is Javi’s secret room filled from floor to ceiling with Nick Cage paraphernalia from posters, props, and a hideous wax figure of Nick. Nick is also visited by his younger self, whom he refers to as “Nicky.” Nicky is the voice of encouragement to Nick, reminding him that he is the man. He seals his pep talk with a long, passionate kiss which had the audience cackling. There is also a good ol’ drug trip scene in which Pascal showed off his comedic abilities.

The performances in this film were nothing short of enjoyable. Cage’s portrayal of himself makes the audience pity his character’s existential crisis while also giving us a good laugh. Pascal’s portrayal of Javi is delightful and sincere. Pascal and Cage’s onscreen chemistry feels wholesome and incredibly fun to watch unfold. The iconic Tiffany Haddish makes her appearance as one of the CIA agents recruiting Nick to carry out this mission. While her role is not the most prominent in the film, she manages to make an impact with her contagious personality and wit. Neil Patrick Harris’ appearance in this movie is small, but he still manages to deliver his loveable charm in his role as Nick’s manager.

While the film is self-aware and deviates from taking itself too seriously, there are also many heartfelt moments, particularly between Nick and his daughter Addy, played by Lily Mo Sheen. Having a close relationship with an artist in whatever capacity is not easy. There’s the busy schedule, the identity crisis, and sometimes self-absorbed moments. Nick and Addy are able to confront these things together and come out on the other side closer than ever.

Despite the film having satirical elements, some comedic moments feel a bit forced. The transitions from scene to the scene did not flow as gracefully at times, and some characters did not get as much screen time as the trailer suggested. However, the movie is certainly worth the time invested. While humorous and self-aware, it makes you consider the pressure that artists find themselves under. It may also have you reconsidering the notions you’ve had about specific actors and that they are perhaps more capable of what you previously gave them credit for. It is one of those films that gives you a bit of everything. Nick Cage has got you covered if you are looking for a fun time filled with laughter, suspense, and maybe even a few tears.
