The opening shots of this French short film begin in a lush field of wild lavender flowers and ends the very same spot. Ten-year old Raphael (Jules Leyendecker) is an eccentric little boy who’s interested in yellow dresses. He spends his days finding the right cloth and sews them together to form an immaculate creation. His mother Faustine (Fanny Guidecoq) isn’t too keen on what her son his doing and doesn’t approve. Raphael takes after his mother and has quite the mouth that would make any other mother aghast.
The film details the struggles of this young Raphael coming to terms with the separation of his mother and father. The father named Edouard (Benoit Del Grande) arrives outside of the house to pick up his son when it’s his turn to see his son. He too isn’t surprised by his son’s exploration of this yellow dress but doesn’t appear to not approve. Writer and Director Alex Ko makes a great looking short film and I really enjoyed seeing these three actors work together. The story is simple, sad at times and by the end, we are hopeful for all the work that young Raphael has spent his days trying his hardest to achieve.

From the glorious cinematography, to the peppy soundtrack, The Yellow Dress is a sweet short film that examines life through the eyes of this young boy. It’s funny, uplifting and yes, at times sad, but we are following him through this journey, and I was smiling for majority of time especially with how it ends. I really liked it!
