Have you seen Jurassic Park? What about The Invisible Man? Even if you haven’t, you must know how the respective stories go. Put them together and you get The Invisible Raptor. A horror comedy that’s sure to make you laugh and make you feel disgusted. The invisible raptor is hyper-intelligent, and upon its escape from a secret lab, it wreaks havoc on the surrounding town. It’s up to a failed paleontologist, Dr. Grant Walker (Mike Capes), his ex-girlfriend, Amber (Caitlin McHugh), an amusement park security guard, Denny (David Shackelford), and a local Chicken farmer, Henrietta (Sandy Martin), to save their small town from the raptor’s frenzy. The film also features Sean Astin, Bobby Gilchrist, and Richard Riehle, and was co-written by Johnny Wickham and the film’s lead, Mike Capes.
This film is a fun watch because it does not take itself too seriously. While it is a horror, it is a comedy first. The basis for any explanation of actions is whether or not the character has seen the movie they mentioned. With the amount of unseriousness, it’s hard to take it seriously as a horror movie. There were even a few times I forgot it was a horror movie. However, there is a chase scene that’s well done that takes place in Amber’s house. McHugh’s facial expressions make her fear in the moment palpable, and it brings into perspective how scary an invisible carnivore would be. But, it’s one of the only times I feel the intensity and uneasiness that horror movies usually have throughout. The film makes up for it with its comedy through its characters.
Each character has their funny moments. Grant lost a lot, which makes his lone wolf attitude funny, rather than provoking. The running gag with Amber’s character is that she is not very vigilant with the kid she is watching, but it works in favor of the film and isn’t overdone. But Denny and Henrietta are for sure the most comical characters. Shackelford’s delivery as Denny makes lines that aren’t typically considered funny, funnier than they should be. Martin’s comedic timing as Henrietta is unmatched in the film. You are sure to laugh at them at least once when watching them. Their lines in the film are some of the funniest and made me genuinely laugh.
While you don’t get to physically see the raptor that’s destroying the town, it occasionally goes into a first-person point of view as the raptor, so that you still get a feel for its actions. It was an excellent choice to watch the raptor create havoc, rather than watching items in a shot mysteriously move around in a fixed point of view. The change of the point of view was a great way to see the raptor and its movements without being able to physically see it.
Score: 3 out of 5 stars
This movie can be fun if you don’t take it too seriously. You will chuckle, you will gag, you will laugh, you will go ew! However, if you’re expecting an intense horror with comedic moments, you will be mistaken. The film leans way into its comedic side more and is at its best in those comedic moments. The Invisible Raptor is available to stream on Tubi.
