From the trailer alone I knew this movie would be action-packed, full of flashy colors, weapons, and plenty of gore. You can never go wrong with a jam-packed action/ horror movie. I definitely got what I was looking for out of this movie because it kept me on the edge of my seat and the wild fight scenes definitely delivered.
Spare Parts is a horror/action movie directed by Andrew Thomas Hunt, written by David Murdoch & Svet Rouskov which stars Michelle Argyris, Emily Alatalo, Kiriana Stanton, Chelsea Muirhead and Julian Richings. This movie is about a punk girl group, Ms. 45, that find themselves having to fight for survival after being drugged and kidnapped after one of their performances. From the start of this movie there is action. The movie starts off with a big fight scene as the women are performing after some rowdy guys get out of hand and join them on stage, touching them unwantedly. We get to see the group dynamic from the start. Jill (Chelsea Muirhead) and Cassy (Kiriana Stanton) are the couple of the group. They are madly in love with a baby on the way. Amy (Michelle Argyris) and Emma (Emily Alatalo) are sisters who have an intense sister rivalry which is a recipe for drama. After the crazy bar fight the girls get ran off the road by one of the men that were at the bar. The girls get seemingly rescued after the tire is blown out and they get taken to a local junkyard which leads to them being drugged and kidnapped.
After awaking, the girls find themselves chained up and missing an arm which has now been replaced with a weapon. The girls end up in a sort of arena surrounded by a cult-like group led by The Emperor (Julian Richings). The girls are then forced to fight to the death with a bunch of weaponed people in a gladiator-esque arena. The fight scenes are brutal, and the deaths are gory, as expected. In this first battle almost all of the members of Ms. 45 make it out alive until Jill gets killed, leaving her partner, Cassy devastated and with a thirst for revenge.
After the loss, the girls are forced to keep it together and stay focused on escaping because they are still being held prisoner by this cult that wants to see them fight to the death. The film does a great job at depicting the females as strong and completely badass. They get offended when the man that took them to the junkyard suggested they keep a man around to keep them safe as they are perfectly capable of defending themselves. The girls prove to be badass when they absolutely dominate the bar fight and then again in the arena where they are forced to fight for survival, they prove to be worthy fighters, ending up being the 3 survivors of the first fight.
As the girl’s train, they only get stronger and more integrated into the gladiator-like cult that is holding them against their will. After becoming deadlier than ever Emma, Amy and Cassy take on 3 of the bikers that were in the bar fight against them in the beginning of the movie, leading to yet another gruesome fight that ends with all 3 girls murdering the bikers. While the girls are fighting for their lives, Emma’s boyfriend is on the search for them, trying to retrace their steps and figure out where they are. He finally makes progress and ends up figuring out where they are but unfortunately this cult has no intention on reuniting him with his girlfriend. At the same time Amy is with one of the main members of the cult, Sam (Jason Rouse) and he tells her she needs to fight him for a new weapon but first he needs to put some gear on. When Amy is charged by a man with a helmet covering his office, she assumes it to be Same, ready to fight for the weapon. After murdering him, Emma comes running into the arena, unmasking the man only for them to find out it is Emma’s boyfriend Amy has killed. Emma then says to Amy “You’re not my sister. You’re my enemy.” This leaves the sisters in a place of instability prior to their final battle.
As the 3rd and final battle nears, new foes invade the junkyard and kill Cassy. Cassy is then replaced by Driller (Ryan Allen) who has been a somewhat ally to the girls since they have been imprisoned. Emma, Amy, and Driller then face off against the 3 foes that killed Cassy. Although Driller is killed, Emma and Amy survive, killing off their enemies. The Emperor then gives the girls a twist, changing the rules of the tradition and demanding the two sisters fight until only one survives. Emma encourages her sister to fight back, but Amy refuses, showing that despite having a complicated relationship, their sisterhood is stronger. Emma then shocks everyone by taking The Emperor down into the arena with him, setting him up for Amy to kill. Amy is then unexpectedly killed by one of the cops associated with the cult, infuriating Emma. The movie ends with Emma becoming the new leader of the cult, having the people who harmed her now fight against each other.
Verdict: 3 out of 5
The movie is filled with tons of action and gore, but the characters fall a little flat, making them hard to really connect to because they are constantly just fighting. Nonetheless the film was fun, entertaining and had a great pace to it making it overall a good experience.
