Against heated debates in today’s political climate, the abortion-centric documentary Zurawski v Texas has made waves, recently winning the first Artemis Rising Foundation Award for Social Impact at the Hamptons International Film Festival.
The award, which recognizes one standout film that challenges societal norms and sparks important cultural conversation, went to the film’s team of directors, Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault.
The film was produced by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton & Jennifer Lawrence and follows a group of women in 2023 who come together to sue the state of Texas after being denied the right to abortion, even while facing serious health risks.
“Our hope for this film has always been to reach as wide an audience as possible to educate, challenge, and inspire viewers through our film participants’ vulnerability and strength,” the directors said, hoping the recognition of their film will help keep the conversation going about access to care for women and families facing similar issues.
Regina K. Scully, founder of the Artemis Rising Foundation, mentioned that the upcoming election has brought more attention to reproductive rights. She feels the film shows the real challenges around these issues and can create emotional connections that lead to change.
On September 24, Bumble hosted a screening series that included Zurawski v Texas, while also having supported its budget. Variety critic Tomris Laffly mentioned that the film argues abortion access shouldn’t be a political issue but a personal matter.
The film had its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in September and is currently looking for distribution.
