Thanks to the Thanksgiving crowd, the box office was well fed this weekend. Between witches and critters, audiences had their pick of theatrical servings. The biggest contributor for this week is Disney’s latest smash hit, Zootopia 2, which earned $156 million for its domestic premiere and snagged an amazing additional $400 million overseas, giving it the largest opening for an animated movie ever, including for sequels. This comes on the heels of another box office hit with Wicked: For Good, which opened the previous week, helping studios and theaters make up for losses the previous month.
Part of Zootopia 2‘s success comes from China, which contributed a whopping $272 million for its premiere, coming as a surprise. David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research elaborated in a quote to Verity, “China has been trouble for American films during the last five years — very little has worked there — but the opening is breaking records. The film is on track to gross more money in China than in the U.S.” Estimates are currently projecting Zootopia 2 to earn its way into the billion-dollar box office club, but whether or not it will usurp the current record holder for largest animated box office gross, Ne Zha 2, sitting at $2 billion, will remain to be seen.
Wicked: For Good came in second, with $62.8 million for its second week, in another win for Universal as it hangs on in the top three.
Third for this week went to Now You See Me: Now You Don’t with $7 million in its third week. Fourth to Predator Badlands with $4.8 million in its fourth week, also securing the spot as the franchise’s best.
Fifth went to Running Man, which just pulled ahead long enough to make the bottom of the top five with $3.72 million, beating new A24 offering Eternity with $3.16 million in sixth.
Rental Family took seventh with 2.1 million in its second week. Newcomer Hammet, an adaptation of a play about William Shakespeare, took eighth with $880 thousand from an incredibly small number of theaters. 119 theaters to be exact. Ninth went to SISU Road to Revenge with $810 thousand in its second week. Rounding out the bottom is Nuremberg with $685 thousand in its fourth week.
