Released on November 26, Disney’s Zootopia 2 has already grossed $1 billion at the global box office. The film has set a new record as the fastest (17 days) Hollywood animated film—and the fastest PG-rated film—to reach the milestone, overtaking Disney’s Inside Out (19 days). The sequel becomes only the third film of 2025 to cross the $1 billion mark, following Lilo & Stitch and Ne Zha 2.
On December 11, the film was just below the mark, earning $986.1 million worldwide, including $232.7 million domestically and $753.4 million internationally. The film reached the milestone on Friday, December 12. The performance was unexpected amid broader industry uncertainty about the future of theatrical releases, and the success highlights continued audience demand for major event films.
The film opened with notable competition, debuting alongside Wicked: For Good on November 21 and A24’s Eternity on November 26. However, Zootopia 2 opened with a record-breaking $559.5 million worldwide over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday, making it the largest global animated opening of all time, Disney’s biggest animated debut, and the top global opening of 2025. The sequel continues the story of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, now officially police officers, as they investigate a new mystery, expanding the world introduced in 2016.
The success also marks Walt Disney Animation Studios’ first back-to-back billion-dollar releases, following Moana 2, bringing the studio’s total to five billion-dollar films since 2013 across the Frozen, Moana, and Zootopia franchises. The film’s momentum is expected to continue throughout the Christmas holiday period, likely boosting family-oriented releases.
