Zoe Kravitz will be taking her bad-ass movie persona to her next project, titled Black Belle, according to Deadline. After several action-packed supporting roles in the Divergent series, X-Men: First Class, and her most recent performance in Mad Max: Fury Road, Kravitz is ready to lead her own action film.
Black Belle will take place in the days following the U.S. Civil War and will follow Kravitz as a lone bounty hunter, hired to carry out others’ revenge. She soon finds herself investigating her own mother’s murder, and carries out a revenge plot of her own against someone closer to her than she thinks.
The film will also have a female-led creative team. Shana Betz, director of the indie Free Ride starring Anna Paquin (TV’s True Blood), has signed on to direct based off a script by tyro scribe Tasha Huo. Filming will begin this September.
Female-led westerns have not been a regular occurrence in the past, however this news will likely give a boost to the genre. Black Belle will soon find company in the long-awaited Natalie Portman (Black Swan) western Jane Got a Gun, which will be out later this year.
In the meantime, Kravitz will be busy promoting her remaining films for this year including Vincent-N-Roxxy with Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild), and Viena and the Fantomes with Dakota Fanning (The Runaways), as well as filming the third Divergent film, Allegiant – Part 1.
