Over the last couple of months, our favorite wall-crawler’s most recent reboot, Spider-Man: Homecoming, has cast a wide variety of talent. As Spidey’s (Tom Holland) supporting cast rolled out, one name remained in the air, Mary Jane Watson. While Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori), Liz Allen (Laura Harrier), Betty Brandt (Angourie Rice), Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon), and even Adrian Toomes A.K.A. The Vulture (Michael Keaton) were announced, many speculated that Zendaya’s mystery role would be the iconic love interest MJ.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the speculation took another turn as Zendaya insisted she is not playing Mary Jane, “I’m not Mary Jane, unfortunately, but I am in the movie, which is exciting.” She went on to confirm earlier reports that she’s actually portraying a character named Michelle. As for her time while working on the film, “It’s incredible, you know? It’s such a huge project to be part of. I mean, who could pick a better thing to be your first movie? Like, I’m speechless. If I could pick a movie, it would be Spider-Man, so I got it.”
It’s still unclear who she will be playing officially, but if she is telling the truth, that leaves out two major love interests, Gwen Stacey and Mary Jane Watson. So who could it be? When you look at the remainder of the cast list the direction in which Peter’s relationships are going points to one person, Liz Allen. That’s right, Spider-Man: Homecoming could possibly follow the classic Stan Lee and Steve Ditko run where Peter Parker had a crush on Liz Allen, but during that time she was dating Flash Thompson- And in the end, by the time she wanted to be with Peter, it was too late, he had already started dating Betty Brandt.
What an emotional roller-coaster that would be! Looks like for now we are just going to have to be okay without Gwen or MJ. Who knows, it might be a nice change.
