Zack Snyder’s newest project Rebel Moon is officially in development at Netflix. The Star Wars-inspired science fiction epic is described as a grand fantasy adventure and is co-written by Snyder, Shay Hatten, and Kurt Johnstad. The story focuses on a young woman tasked with finding warriors to help quell an impending invasion on the outskirts of the galaxy from the evil Regent Belisarius.
Rebel Moon has cast Sofia Boutella in the lead role along with Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher, Doona Bae, Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, and Sky Yang. Snyder previously worked with Fisher, who starred as Cyborg in Justice League (2021), and Malone, who starred in Sucker Punch (2011).
Variety reported last year that Snyder originally created the project as a Star Wars pitch but ultimately made it his own once Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. Snyder even went as far as to say that his love for Star Wars inspired the project, so it is sure to have significant comparisons to the popular franchise. Rebel Moon is also intended to become a franchise of its own, if successful. Snyder will produce alongside his wife, Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller through The Stone Quarry, their production company.
The concept art, released by Snyder in honor of the casting announcement, depicts sprawling futuristic cityscapes with sweeping spaceships in orbit above and a crowd of people bowing before some kind of overlord, presumably, the Regent Belisarius mentioned in the synopsis. Other images depict worlds with climates of snow and sand.
