Zach Cregger recently discussed his upcoming Resident Evil movie in an interview with Inverse. The Weapons director provided more details about the film, saying that he’s “not breaking the rules of the games” and that the movie will depict a story “outside of the characters of the games.” “I am the biggest worshiper of the games,” he said. “So I’m telling a story that is a love letter to the games and follows the rules of the games”.
Creggar added that while the film will be “obedient to the lore of the games”, it’ll be “a different story”. To explain his logic in adapting the video games this way, Creggar said, “I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. Fans already have that.”
Creggar will be directing this new Resident Evil movie, from a script co-written by him and Shay Hatten. Sony Pictures is currently set to release the film in theaters on September 18th, 2026. The film is set to be a complete cinematic reboot of the video game franchise, unrelated to Paul W.S. Anderson’s movies or Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which was released in 2021.
