Netflix’s You People ends with a romantic kiss between the two protagonists. However, it seems as if the kiss never really happened. According to a film team member, the kiss was achieved through CGI.
You People, is a romantic comedy starring Jonah Hill and Lauren London as Ezra and Amira, respectively. Kenya Barris directed the film, which centers on an interracial couple that struggles with how their families face their relationship and later engagement. The film has been criticized because the couple feels unbelievable to the audience. This aspect was discussed later in the podcast The Brilliant Idiots, where comedian Andrew Schulz is co-host next to Charlamagne Tha God. Schulz worked in the film starring as Ezra’s cousin.
During the podcast, Nyla Simone, who attended as a guest, mentioned that she agreed with social media comments about the couple in You People not being believable. After the comment Schultz mentioned that the wedding kiss between the characters was never filmed and was later made in post-production, Schultz said:
“here’s a hilarious thing – I don’t even know if I should share this shit – but the final scene, they don’t even kiss…It’s CGI. Swear to God.”
“I’m there — I’m watching the wedding — and I see them go in for the kiss, and their faces stop like this far. And I’m like, ‘I wonder how they’re gonna play that in the movie. Oh, they’re probably just gonna cut right there.’ But the movie, you could see their faces come close, and then you could see their faces morph a little bit into a fake kiss.”
Previously London had expressed her initial concern about the couple feeling genuine. She stated:
“I thought, ‘Why would these two people really like each other? … We have to showcase a real connection. They’re from two totally different worlds, and if you see them, you would never think that they would meet or hang out, whatever the case is.”
You People is available on Netflix and stars Eddie Murphy, Nia Long, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kenya Barris, Jonah Hill, and Lauren London.
