Tim Miller, director of Deadpool (and not the director of Deadpool 2), is now attached to direct an X-Men spinoff movie about Kitty Pryde. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he will work from script by famed comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis. There isn’t any casting news, so whether Ellen Page will reprise her role as Katherine Anne “Kitty” Pryde remains unknown. Page played the phase-shifting mutant in X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Pryde was the youngest mutant to join the X-Men, so if the story takes place early in her X-Men tenure then re-casting the role is all but certain.
While we’re on the subject of the storyline, the project is currently code-named 143, which refers to a comic book from 1981: Uncanny X-Men No. 143. In the story, titled Demon, Kitty is left alone in the X-Men mansion on Christmas Eve when she receives an unexpected visitor. She faces a demonic adversary named N’Garai and has to use her powers (“phasing” through solid objects, disrupting electrical fields, levitating, freaking TIME TRAVEL) to eventually trick him into walking head-first into wall. Just kidding about the last part.
Nobody knows how the Disney-Fox merger could potentially affect this project, but for now this sounds like it could become cult classic Christmas movie (like Die Hard, or Reindeer Games).
