“Wuthering Heights“, Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of the classic 1847 novel of the same name, is set to over-perform expectations in its opening weekend. The film, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, was projected to earn approximately $40 million domestically.
At first, the film didn’t quite meet those projections, grossing only $3 million in Thursday previews and $13.5 million on Friday, totaling $35 million domestically. The film has managed to bounce back with a strong weekend, bringing the domestic box office gross in range of the $40 million projection.
In addition, the film has grossed $42 million internationally, bringing its total opening weekend to $82 million. With this total gross, the film became the highest-grossing film of 2026 so far in only its first weekend. Wuthering Heights has outgrossed previous 2026 releases like Send Help ($73 million worldwide), 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple ($56 million worldwide), and Iron Lung ($44 million worldwide).
This total comes as the film deals with a fairly stacked lineup of other new releases. These include the animated sports comedy GOAT; Crime 101, a crime drama starring Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan, and Mark Ruffalo; the Gore Verbinski Sci-fi film Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die; and the indie comedy Nirvanna: The Band – the Show – the Movie.
Time will tell how Wuthering Heights will perform in the subsequent weekends, but it is hard to deny that this is a massive opening considering the films $80 million budget. The film is in theaters in both premium and standard formats.
