‘Wuthering Heights’ Makes Box Office Swoon With 34.8 Million Domestic Valentines Weekend Premiere

Margot Robbie in "Wuthering Heights"

Valentine’s weekend kicked off with a bang and wraps it’s run up with a bow on top with Wuthering Heights leading the charge with a 34.8 million domestic debut. There were plenty of options this weekend to bring audiences to theaters leading to the best opening for 2026 so far. Wuthering Heights holds the title for the international best release of 2026 with a solid 82 million, this could be from audiences being in the mood for romance helped the film reach a peak and outperform the other options on the plate but whether it will continue to dominate the second month of the year remains to be seen. Plagued by mixed reviews most of which center on complaints about whitewashing of the casting and many changes in the film from the tone and story of the original classic novel arguing that it is not an adaptation and should be recognized as something entirely different from what Emily Bronte wrote which can be seen across critics and social media reviews from audiences. Even so Emerald Fennell’s film still managed to find an audience which has been slightly tighter to the film and critics. Fennell’s Wuthering Heights stars Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff the iconic villainous love interest of the gothic novel, the rest of the ensemble cast is made up by Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, Martin Clunes, Ewan Mitchell, and Alison Oliver.

In second came to family animated film from Sony animation Goat, following an anthropromorophic goat’s dream to become a pro basketball player. Goat brought in 26 million for its debut landing in second. In third place came the Chris Hemsworth leading crime thriller Crime 101 from director Bart Layton, better known for his documentaries. The next notable film in the top ten this week is Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, from director Gore Verbinski who after a near decade long hiatus after leaving Studios behind with the critical and commercial bombing of the Lone Ranger. Best known for the still iconic Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy as director, Verbinski came back with a dark comedy sci-fi focusing on a time traveler who attempts to stop an AI takeover but is mistaken for a crazy hobo leading to the film that currently has critics praising it but audiences responding with more mixed reactions as is typical for sci-fi films.
