The prequel film Wonka debuted at $3.5 million in Thursday previews and, according to Variety, has made over $43 million worldwide, topping the box office. Due to its recent release, the numbers are bound to inflate.
Wonka has debuted in 37 markets– going on 40 more international markets the following weekend– including Spain, the U.K., Mexico, Japan, and Germany. Its $11.1 million start in the U.K. is the studio’s second-biggest opening of the year, right below Barbie. Compared to other countries, Wonka’s release struggled in China, like other recent Hollywood films, earning only $3.2 million due to low ticket sales because of the flu outbreak.
In this year’s Warner Bros. musical take of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Timothée Chalamet stars as a young Willy Wonka, an aspiring inventor with a hat full of dreams and enough candy to change the world– albeit surrounded by a greedy industry. Alongside Chalamet, the film stars Hugh Grant, Olivia Coleman, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Keegan-Michael Key and Mathew Baynton.
From the creator of the Paddington franchise, Paul King, and produced by Harry Potter franchise producer David Heyman, Wonka will win over families with its magical adventure fueled with a whimsical soundtrack. Chalamet introduces a new generation to Willy Wonka and shows his vibrancy as he brings the iconic character to life in this PG-rated feature.
