Wonder Woman 1984, starring Gal Gadot, is one of very few blockbusters to be released in this odd year that has become 2020, and Warner Bros has fully committed to releasing the Patty Jenkins sequel to the popular 2017 film.
Earlier this week news broke that Wonder Woman 1984 will in fact be released in the United States simultaneously in theaters and HBO Max on Christmas Day, December 25, 2020. Now Warner Brothers. has released a full release schedule for the global market.
Theater going is not as simple as it was just about a year ago. For one the domestic market has taken a huge hit with the COVID-19 pandemic as most theaters are closed across the US. Those that are open are struggling to get any business. While across the Atlantic, it isn’t too much better.
Italian and English cinemas remain closed for the time being due to new lockdown measures. This is the case in those locations while in France the country is opening its theaters on December 15, just a day before the release of Wonder Woman 1984 in that market.
Overall, it is somewhat refreshing to see a blockbuster release in this tough year. Movies are supposed to entertain and make people forget about the harsh reality of life. This is most likely going to be a huge financial risk for Warner Bros, the first movie made about $821 million at the global box office just three years ago, and it is clear that this time, due to the ongoing pandemic, Wonder Woman 1984 would be lucky to make half of that.
Though kudos to Warner Bros. for releasing it in theaters and HBO Max so movie goers can choose whether to see it in theaters or the safety of their homes. But, HBO Max is still not available in many locations, so in some foreign markets the film will be released early.
