Leatherface became a popular name in the horror community when he made his debut in Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, played originally by Gunnar Hansen. The titular character has been portrayed by six actors, has appeared in all seven films, debuted in Northstar Comics in 1991, and even made an appearance in Mortal Kombat X.
An origins story simply titled Leatherface is scheduled to be released on September 21st, on DirecTV Exclusive, Video on Demand and a limited release in theaters on October 20. The film will serve as a prequel to the 1974 film and detail the life of a young teenager who eventually will become Leatherface. The plot involves a group of teenagers who escape from a mental institution, hold a nurse hostage, and take a road trip to hell, literally. An equally deranged lawman who is hell-bent on revenge is in pursuit.
The film is written by Seth M. Sherwood (short film Black Mass) and is being directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (the controversial French film Inside). The cast includes Stephen Dorff (Blade), Lili Taylor (The Conjuring), Sam Strike (BBC’s EastEnders), James Bloor (The Total Princess), and Finn Jones (Marvel’s Iron Fist).
The film will makes its worldwide debut at Fright Fest in London on August 25.
