Wicked was able to defy gravity when it was released back in November. Even well after its success in theaters, it’s still racking up major numbers in the home entertainment industry.
Wicked tells part of the backstory of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. While still to be concluded later this year with Wicked: For Good, this film follows Elphaba as she navigates school to hone her own powers while trying to face down steep prejudices with the help of her unlikely friend Glinda.
While it’s now available to rent, stream, and own, the film managed to pull in $100 million from digital sales alone. This was confirmed by Peter Levinsohn of Universal himself at CinemaCon, thanks to reporting from Deadline.
When adding the $100 million revenue from at-home sales, Wicked has taken quite the profit since its release in November. Collider notes that the overall gross of the film is now at $850 million when adding the box office gross of around $750 million worldwide.
Wicked dominated the box office upon its release, racking up massive numbers alongside Gladiator II, and days later Moana 2. That trifecta of films made for one of the most lucrative Thanksgiving weekends in box office history. Moana 2 would later go on to break $1 billion at the box office, as well.
Wicked: For Good hits theaters this November.
