Universal released the first trailer for the second part of Wicked, titled Wicked: For Good last Wednesday. They recently revealed that the trailer hit 113 million views in its first 24 hours. For reference, the first film racked up 75 million views in its first 24 hours. Sequels tend to perform better than the original, so with excitement drummed up after the first film, this is not a huge surprise. Trailer drops have not always been common like this, but currently the record for most views in 24 hours goes to Deadpool & Wolverine with 365 million in its first 24 hours.
The trailer actually debuted behind special screenings of Wicked Wednesday evening. Universal released Wicked for one night only in over 100 U.S. theaters in special screenings. Those screenings were followed by the world premiere of the Wicked: For Good trailer.
Wicked grossed $774 million when it released last November, making it one of the biggest releases of 2024. The film was also nominated for many awards, including a Best Picture nomination and Best Actress and Supporting Actress for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande respectively. With hype and excitement generated from the success of the first film, Wicked: For Good is expected to be a smashing success when it hits theaters on November 21st. The film shares the month with another highly anticipated sequel, Zootopia 2, which releases less than a week afterward. This also matches last year’s release schedule, with Universal releasing Wicked in late November and Disney releasing Moana 2 a few days later.
