It’s going to be a wicked weekend for the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Wicked: For Good has made its wide debut, and is making tidal waves at an otherwise dull Autumn box office.
Wicked: For Good picks up the threads of last year’s Wicked, which also dominated at the Thanksgiving box office. Just when they began to grow together, both Elphaba and Glinda are forced apart as the citizens of Oz force them to fulfill roles determined beyond their control.
Although the first Wicked was able to crush the competition with a domestic opening of $112.5 million domestically, according to Hollywood Reporter, Wicked: For Good is looking to top even that number. Taking in a massive amount of nearly $70 million from Friday and early preview shows, For Good is looking to clear at least $150 million domestically this weekend.
At this rate, it’s no surprise that For Good can clear the numbers that last year’s Wicked put up. The popularity of the first film was through the roof, with Wicked already being quite a big deal thanks to the Broadway play. But the runtime of For Good is right around a half hour shorter than its predecessor, making more space for showtimes comparatively.
Although it’s set to become one of the best openings for a musical, Wicked: For Good won’t be at the peak of three-day 2025 openings. That still belongs to A Minecraft Movie, which opened with $162 million domestically (per BoxOfficeMojo) in its first outing.
Wicked: For Good is now playing in theaters.
