After Wicked’s huge box office success, the critically acclaimed film nabbed four 2025 Golden Globe nominations. With the leads, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande getting a nomination in their respective categories.
The film was nominated for Best Picture, musical, or comedy. Meanwhile, Erivo, who plays the titular character Elphaba, was nominated for best performance by a female actor in a musical or comedy film. Grande was also nominated for best performance by a female actor in a supporting role in any film.
The final award Wicked earned a nomination for was cinematic and box office achievement. This new award was first introduced last year, and Barbie won for its exceptional box office performance. Wicked made history with the highest opening for a musical adaptation, garnering almost $114 million domestically.
Although the film’s stars scored big, the film’s director, Jon M. Chu, was not nominated for best director. The movie’s soundtrack was also not nominated since it did not contain any original music, the writers chose to use the music from the already-established Broadway musical.
Wicked: Part Two is said to include never-before-heard music produced specifically for the motion picture. The second part is set to release in cinemas on November 21, 2025.
