Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…
These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.
We may be a day late (and perhaps a dollar short), but we’ve still got the trailers ripe for your perusal. This week we have a mix of the good, the bad, and the ugly, and some that occupy two or all three of those characteristics. Let me explain:
Honorable Mention – Man of Steel 2 Fan Made Trailer
We brought this to you earlier in the week, and it’s just too much fun to leave off this list entirely. Solidly in the “good” category.
#5 – Divergent Teaser Trailer 1
This trailer looks bad, but the trend it’s part of is downright ugly, and that significance is why it’s on this list. Divergent is the latest in a run of teen book adaptations that, with some decent funding and marketing, have almost universally been cash cows even if the movies aren’t that good. Harry Potter? Twilight? The Hunger Games? These are the new comic book movies, the next trend. But with The Mortal Instruments bombing a couple weeks ago and Divergent feeling very much like a retread, we’ll see if it’s a trend with legs.
#4 – Zaytoun Official Trailer 1
This is a 2012 film, but it’s finally finding release in the U.S. this September with a limited theatrical run. Exemplifying both the good (the movie) and the ugly (unfortunately the nature of Israeli-Palestinian relations), it’s solidly on this week’s countdown.
#3 – The Turning Theatrical Trailer 1
The teaser for this movie pulled down an honorable mention back in July, and this slightly longer trailer exhibits many of the same qualities that made us love it then. Unlike many trailers today that give away huge chunks of the plot, this trailer is all about questions. I still don’t really know what this movie is about, but that just makes me want to find out even more.
#2 – Narcocultura Official Trailer 1
This is bad. And Ugly. And very, very good. I am scared by what I see in this trailer, but it’s so incredibly compelling. It puts you in the situation of another person, and despite every fiber of your being screaming, “Why?” you begin to understand. Good movies, and perhaps particularly good documentaries, do that.
#1 – Dallas Buyers Club
But our top spot goes to what looks to be a very good movie about a man with a very bad disease who has to fight through the ugly underground that is the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry. Hurry up, November!
