Welcome to the Weekly Trailer Roundup, where we count down the top five trailers released in the past week, “top” being defined any way we want to at the moment…exciting, ridiculous, best, worst…
These are the trailers that, for one reason or another, you should be paying attention to.
Call them homages, call them ripoffs, call them whatever you want, throwback films are on what’s on the menu today. What’s a throwback film? Why it’s a film that through visuals, plot, style, character archetypes, or some unexplainable general feeling, seem to draw heavy inspiration from a genre or subgenre of yesteryear. A lousy explanation? Perhaps. But don’t worry, all will become clear as we count down this week’s trailers.
#5 – Turbo Kid
Remember post-Apocalyptic films fit to burst with psychos clad in leather and sportswear? Mad Max: Fury Road does; but it didn’t wheel out a new trailer this week. So, instead we’re looking at the upcoming SXSW indie feature Turbo Kid.
#4 – The Demolisher
Sure, the immediate impulse is to compare any vigilante-revenge-thriller Death Wish, but there’s something about The Demolisher (perhaps the title and the protagonist’s helmet) that makes me think of James Glickenhaus’s The Exterminator.
#3 – We Are Still Here
Just look at the not-so-cozy haunted home in We Are Still Here and try telling me it doesn’t belong in a 70’s horror film like Burnt Offerings or The Amityville Horror. Are throwbacks going to be a trend at SXSW this year?
#2 – Deathgasm
Yes they are. I’ve gotta say, I never thought I’d get chance to write anything about a film that reminds me of insane metal-infused 80’s horror films (think Night of the Demons or Trick or Treat) like Deathgasm does.
#1 – Kill Me Three Times
This one might not seem as obvious as the others, but Kill Me Three Times‘ blending of criminal shenanigans, multiple intersecting storylines, not completely competent characters, and dark humor reminds me of crime films from the 90’s like Pulp Fiction and Go. Anyone else see it?
