The first trailer has surfaced for the new biopic on chess legend Bobby Fischer, Pawn Sacrifice. Tobey Maguire (The Great Gatsby) plays Fischer, the chess prodigy who became a national icon for taking on the Russian chess great, Boris Spassky (Liev Schreiber, Lee Daniels’ The Butler). Through the attention, Fischer develops a borderline-crippling paranoia.
Maguire has been out of the spotlight since he played Nick Carraway in 2013’s The Great Gatsby. He doesn’t have any other roles currently in the works though he is producing the upcoming sci-fi movies Z for Zachariah and The 5th Wave. He also served as a producer for Pawn Sacrifice.
Ed Zwick (Blood Diamond) directed the movie and his work is known for its mass audience appeal as well potential for awards. He’s also on tap to direct the sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
Pawn Sacrifice will be released in a limited run September 18. Pending critical and audience reception, it should then expand to more theaters.
