“There is nothing scarier than becoming your mother” reads the tagline for Sony’s latest horror, Umma (Mother). The film stars Sandra Oh as a reclusive single mother who must face the demons of her past before they destroy her future.
The IMDb synopsis reads: “Amanda (Sandra Oh) and her daughter (Fivel Stewart) live a quiet life on an American farm, but when the remains of her estranged mother arrive from Korea, Amanda becomes haunted; by the fear of turning into her own mother.”
The trailer reveals Amanda’s peaceful life on a bee farm with her teenage daughter, where no motor vehicles or telephones are allowed; they are completely isolated. Amanda is content with that, as her daughter is all she needs.
However, their oasis is threatened when a strange man visits with Amanda’s mother’s remains from Korea, warning her that she gets angrier the more she is trapped in the box. Amanda attempts to hide everything from her daughter as she believes the Korean superstition that tormented ancestors causes one’s problems. However, her attempts were in vain. Amanda’s daughter starts feeling her stranglehold and launches resentment toward her mother, vowing to leave her, much like Amanda left her mother in Korea.
Written and directed by Iris K. Shim, Umma portrays an uncanny valley look at happy family life while unattended evil lurks underneath.
Umma will be released to North American theaters on March 18, 2022.
