For a film that was finished 2 years ago, it’s unusual to see it just starting to gain notice. However, when your lead actor just starred in one of the biggest movies of all time, its timely momentum is now no surprise. With Star Wars: The Force Awakens becoming the highest grossing film ever domestically, John Boyega’s career is expected to catch fire.
His upcoming film Imperial Dreams was brought to the Sundance Film Festival back in 2014 and hasn’t been seen by many people outside of the festival circuit (its final and 17th appearance was at the Waterfront Film Festival in September 2015), but it did happen to catch J.J. Abrams’ attention, which led to Boyega being cast in the most recent Star Wars installment.
Despite having a positive response from critics, Imperial Dreams failed to get sold to a studio, but with Boyega becoming a household face, the film is back on the market.
Inspired by a true story, the film follows a 21-year-old inner city man who is recently returning home from prison and must now take on the responsibility of taking care of his family in Watts, Los Angeles.
The film is directed by newcomer Malik Vitthal and written by Ismet Prcic and Jonathan Schwartz (Like Crazy).
