The trailer for Black is King, an upcoming film based off of the music from The Lion King that was produced, written, and directed by Beyoncé Knowles-Carter herself, has officially been released by Disney, per CinemaBlend. While it is at the moment hard to discern a specific plot for the project, the trailer is a mesmerizing blend of symbols of black liberation, surrealist imagery, and breathtaking African wildlife. It features stunning cinematography, spoken word, and music that leave a discernible mark on the viewer
Black is King is being branded as a “visual album,” meaning new Beyoncé music will come with it, along with collaborations from other artists that have yet to be announced. It is inspired by The Lion King and the messages and sentiments deriving from it. Last year, she helped to produce the live-action remake of the film and starred as the voice of Nala.
Much more will be revealed when the project officially drops exclusively on Disney+ on July 31st.
Disney+ has been quickly adding highly valuable, original new content that is further solidifying its status as a must-have streaming service. For instance, Hamilton the movie is set to be released exclusively on the platform on July 3rd.
This is not the first time Beyoncé has created a visual album for her work, as for 2016’s Lemonade, she released a 46-minute TV speical accompanying it.
