Image Entertainment has released the official trailer for its horror-infused romantic comedy Burying the Ex. From Gremlins director Joe Dante and first-time screenwriter Alan Trezza, the film stars Anton Yelchin (Fright Night) as Max, a guy who thinks he has nabbed the perfect girlfriend, Evelyn, played by Ashley Greene (the Twilight series). After they move in together and their relationship takes a turn for the worse, Max is almost relieved when Evelyn dies in a fatal bus crash. Max moves on with a new girl (played by Alexandra Daddario from HBO’s True Detective) only to have Evelyn come back into his life as a zombie, convinced that they are still dating.
If this plot seems a bit familiar, you are not alone. This genre has had a surge in popularity as of late, thanks largely to 2013’s Warm Bodies. In addition, an indie flick from last year titled Life After Beth, which starred Dane DeHaan (Chronicle), Aubrey Plaza (TV’s Parks and Recreation), and Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), followed an eerily similar plot to BtE. If anything, the two films may differ in comedy content. Life After Beth was written and directed by I Heart Huckabees writer Jeff Baena and was more quirkily comedic, featuring Plaza’s well-known brand of off-beat humor. Burying the Ex, on the other hand, will most likely have a darker tone based on Dante’s body of work, which includes Small Soldiers and the Witches of East End series, in addition to the Gremlins films.
Burying the Ex will have a limited release in theaters starting June 19 and will also be available on VOD. Check out the trailer below.
