HBO Max has revealed a trailer for their new Seth Rogen lead comedy An American Pickle and it looks hilarious. An American Pickle, according to the film’s official press release, follows Rogen as Herschel Greenbaum, “a Polish ditch digger who immigrates to the U.S. in 1920 to fulfill his American dream. Herschel finds work at a pickle factory, only to fall into a vat of brine, putting him into suspended animation. A century later, Herschel emerges from the brine in 2020, fully preserved. Although all of his immediate family members have died, Herschel is able to locate his grandson, Ben— who is also played by Rogen.”
The trailer showcases this culture clash as Herschel explored the new world with his grandson by his side. He notices that Ben is lonely and wants to help raise the wellbeing of their family by starting their own pickle business, which appears from this trailer to be a hit.
This fish out of water scenario isn’t new, but the reasoning behind the scenario being suspended animation in a pickle jar is certainly new. The film boasts an all star cast which includes Sarah Snook, Sean Whalen, Jorma Taccone, Joanna Adler, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Geoffrey Cantor, David Mattey, Charles Rogers and Kevin O’Rourke and is based on Simon Rich’s short story, Sell Out.
The film marks the first original feature film released by HBO Max, who entered into the streaming arena May 27. The film will debut on the fledgling platform August 6th.
