Universal has released the official red band trailer for the upcoming N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton. Based on N.W.A’s debut album of the same name – famous for its condemnation of police brutality – the film tracks the group’s rise and fall as pioneers of gangsta rap, focusing in particular on their galvanizing influence on pop culture and the federal government’s attempts to silence them.
None of the original N.W.A members will appear in the film, though two of them (Ice Cube and Dr. Dre) will be involved as co-producers, and Ice Cube will be portrayed by his son, O’Shea Jackson Jr. Paul Giamatti (Sideways) will also star as the group’s manager, Jerry Heller. The movie was directed by F. Gary Gray, whose first movie was the Ice Cube comedy Friday. The red band trailer features a black-and-white introduction by Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, who return to their old neighborhood to reflect on the group’s cultural impact and continued political relevance.
Straight Outta Compton will be released on August 14, 2015.
