The first trailer has been released for Sophie Barthes’ film adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, which played the festival circuit last year, and will be released in the U.S. sometime in 2015. The film stars Mia Wasikowska as Emma Bovary, a restless housewife who attempts to break free from her dull, provincial life through romantic fantasies and impassioned love affairs.
This will be Wasikowska’s third turn as a renowned literary figure, after her titular performances in Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre (2011) and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (2010). Madame Bovary also stars Henry Lloyd-Hughes as Emma’s husband, with Ezra Miller and Logan Marshall-Green as her lovers. Rhys Ifans, Laura Carmichael, and Paul Giamatti round out the rest of the cast.
Barthes is the latest of a host of directors who have adapted Flaubert’s magnum opus to the screen, including Jean Renoir (1934), Vincente Minnelli (1949), and Claude Chabrol (1991). Critics have given particular praise to Barthes’ lush visuals, created by cinematographer Andrij Parekh – which you can get a glimpse of in the trailer below.
