“Lucha libre” is a style of Mexican professional wrestling, where men and women dress up in costumes – which often involve vibrant, expressive masks – and put on staged fights – which often involve the participants executing gravity-defying aerial maneuvers. The upcoming documentary Lucha Mexico aims to give a close look at the performers who take part in this spectle that combines of live theater, performance art, and combat sport.

In Mexico, the fight between good and evil has been waged every week for decades, thrilling generations of fans with the spectacle of Lucha Libre. Real-life superheroes and villains, these masked wrestlers put their lives on the line night after night to entertain the legions of fans. Gaining remarkable access to all the major Lucha promotions, Alex Hammond and Ian Markiewicz offer an entertaining, no holds barred look at some of the sport’s top performers, featuring the “1000% Guapo” Shocker, Luchador heir Blue Demon Jr, the tragic hardcore wrestler El Hijo Del Perro Aguayo, and extreme American bodybuilder Jon “Strongman” Andersen. Lucha Mexico goes behind the mask, on a journey into the heart of Mexico.
Other interviewees include veterans of the “hardcore” lucha libre style, Damian 666 and Halloween, plus female wrestler Sexy Star – who can currently be seen on the American wrestling show, Lucha Underground.
Lucha Mexico had its U.S. premiere at the 2015 DOC NYC film festival. It will be playing nationwide starting July 15th.
