Open Road Films has released the first clip from The Gunman, the latest action thriller from Pierre Morel, opening on March 20. The film stars Sean Penn (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) as Jim Terrier, an international operative suffering from PTSD who is looking to leave his life as a contract killer. In order to clear his name, Terrier finds himself running across Europe in an attempt to escape people from his past, including the mysterious operative Dupont (Idris Elba, Avengers: Age of Ultron). In the clip, titled “Murphy’s Law,” Dupont approaches Terrier and eerily asks him whether he’s ever had one of those days when “everything’s going wrong and everyone wants to kill you for something.”
Based on that exchange, The Gunman looks like it will be a continuation of the slick, suspenseful style Morel developed in his previous two films, Taken (2009) and From Paris with Love (2010). The visuals display Morel’s experience as a cinematographer, having done camerawork on films such as The Transporter (2002) and War (2007). The Gunman also stars Javier Bardem (Skyfall), Mark Rylance (The BFG), and Jasmine Trinca (Saint Laurent).
