Paramount has released a trailer for the new drama Captive starring David Oyelowo (Selma) and Kate Mara (Fantastic Four). Based on a true story, the movie follows a single mother struggling with drug addiction (Mara), who is captured by an escaped convict (Oyelowo) trying to reunite with his son. While locked down, the two bond over the Christian-based self help book The Purpose Driven Life. The movie is based on the memoir Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero.
Paramount picked up the film back in March. The movie was directed by Jerry Jameson (TV’s Walker Texas Ranger) and written by Brian Bird (TV’s Touched by an Angel). Mimi Rogers (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery), Michael K. Williams (12 Years a Slave), and Jessica Oyelowo (Alice in Wonderland, and also David Oyelowo’s wife) also star in the film.
Faith-based dramas have traditionally done well at the box office, with Christian groups often organizing trips to attend screenings. Last year’s Heaven is for Real did exceptionally well, grossing more than $91 million domestically on a $12 million budget. With David Oyelowo hot off his acclaimed performance in Selma and Mara appearing in this summer’s new Fantastic Four, the movie could prove to be a draw for all kinds of audiences.
Captive hits theaters September 18. You can check out the trailer below.
