The first film of a four-movie deal between funny man Adam Sandler and streaming giant Netflix received it’s first trailer earlier this today, and it’s everything you’d expect from a Happy Madison film. The Ridiculous 6 takes place in the western country where an outlaw (portrayed by Sandler) discovers he has five brothers and together they embark on a journey to find their father.
In typical Sandler fashion, the film is full of hijinks and slapstick comedy that the comedian and his films are known for. The western comedy will try to succeed in a genre where so many have tried and failed before, the most recent being Seth McFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West. Of course, the deep pockets of Netflix help out considerably.
Back in April, the production of the film was marred with controversy over the script’s offensive portrayal of Native Americans. Multiple cast members walked off set, including the cultural consultant, who was the first to leave the film. Netflix mostly ignored the criticism, citing the ‘ridiculous’ in the title of the film as an escape to avoid controversy, stating, “the movie has ridiculous in the title for a reason: because it is ridiculous.”
The trailer does little to reveal the major plot of the film, choosing instead to highlight the western set and full array of comedic actors in the film. Frank Coraci, a frequent collaborator with Sandler, directed the script by Tim Herlihy and Sandler which stars stars Steve Buscemi, Taylor Lautner, Terry Crews, Will Forte, Rob Schneider, Luke Wilson, Steve Zahn, David Space, John Turturro, Jorge Garcia, Jon Lovitz and Nick Nolte.
In recent years, Adam Sandler’s star has waned with many of his films failing at the box office. A turn to the new world of streaming may be exactly what Sandler’s career may need to revitalize his once sterling box office reputation.
