The first thing people recall about last year’s Academy Awards ceremony is the Best Picture presentation. Warren Beatty calling out the wrong film instantly went down as an iconic moment in Oscars history. Not all mistakes beget second chance, but this year Beatty and Bonnie and Clyde co-star Faye Dunaway get a chance to redeem themselves.
Last year the duo was tapped to present the Best Picture Oscar due to the 50th anniversary of Bonnie and Clyde, and the Academy has supposedly asked them to return for the 90th Academy Awards this Sunday. They will again present for Best Picture, according to reports from TMZ, who caught their rehearsal recently at the Dolby Theatre.
Dunaway is heard saying, “Presenting is better the second time around,” followed by Beatty joking, “The winner is ‘Gone with the Wind.’” This is most likely not the final version of their lines for the ceremony, especially now that it’s been leaked, but it’s enough to know that last year’s flub will indeed be addressed.
In all fairness to Clyde, it wasn’t really his fault. The firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, who is in charge of handling the votes, gave the wrong envelope to the presenters. “I opened the envelope and it said, ‘Emma Stone, La La Land.’ That’s why I looked at Faye, and at [Jimmy Kimmel]. I wasn’t trying to be funny,” Beatty clarified on stage at the time.
PwC proceeded to remove the accountants responsible from working the event, but PwC will still be handling the proceedings this year. Last year’s ceremony captivated 32.9 million viewers, so hopefully things go smoothly this time around. The telecast airs Sunday, March 4th at 8pm ET on ABC.
