Today Warner Bros. announced the planned release date for their high-profile White Bulger biopic, formerly titled Black Mass, as September 18th of 2015. The movie, which is currently filming in the Boston area, stars Johnny Depp (Transcendence) as the infamous mobster who, after going into hiding for years, was recently caught in Santa Monica, CA. If that date holds true, Warner Bros. will face some stiff competition going up against another high profile movie – Universal’s Everest, the mountain-climbing disaster movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke.
The Warner Bros. movie has been in the news a lot recently as it has filled out its star-studded cast. Kevin Bacon (X-Men: First Class) was just added alongside Depp, where he will join Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness), Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby), Adam Scott (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), Sienna Miller (Foxcatcher), Julianne Nicholson (August: Osage County), and Juno Temple (Maleficent), among others.
The movie is being directed by Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace, Crazy Heart), who himself made news recently when it was announced that he would next direct a movie about the firefighting tragedy in Yarnell, Arizona last year. Given the subject matter and amazing cast of Cooper’s Whitey Bulger movie, it’s already shaping up to be one of next year’s most anticipated movies.
