In a packed Hall H at Warner Bros.’ Comic-Con panel on Saturday, the studio rolled out a list of upcoming DC Universe titles that just about everyone is already aware of – Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and The Flash. But in an unexpected surprise, the studio announced the title of the planned Green Lantern reboot will be Green Lantern Corps.
Fans of the comics will know that the Corps. is a kind of interglactic peacekeeping force featuring all the Green Lanterns in the galaxy, with each Lantern assigned to a separate sector of the universe. The Lanterns share a main battery and use their Lantern rings to enhance and increase their powers. 2011’s The Green Lantern centered specifically on Lantern Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), but the title for the upcoming film opens up the possibility that other Lanterns like Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, and John Stewart might surface as protagonists.
No casting information has been announced as of yet, but the internet is abuzz that both Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Tyrese Gibson (Furious 7) are being considered for lead roles. Fan artwork of Pine and Gibson surfaced on the internet a few weeks ago and in a cryptic interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gibson said:
There are certain things I can’t speak on, but I will say, however this works out, it’s definitely the fans’ fault. I was at home minding my own business and fans start creating these fan-made videos of me as Green Lantern and I looked into it. I’ve been a fan of the Green Lantern. I took the oath, and I had a meeting at Warner Bros. and certain things were said and talked about. We’ll just see what happens.
If everything goes according to plan, Green Lantern Corps. is slated for a June 19, 2020 release date.
