Sony has released a new poster and trailer for their upcoming movie based on the children’s horror book series Goosebumps. The movie stars Jack Black (The D Train) as series author R.L. Stein. When Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette, Let Me In) and his mother (Amy Ryan, Birdman) move into the house next door to the writer and his daughter (Odeya Rush, The Giver), he opens one of his manuscripts, unleashing the monsters from the series.
Similar to Jurassic World, it looks like Sony is looking to hit that sweet spot with children and their parents by pairing monsters from many of the classic books that young parents grew up with – including Mr. Wood from Night of the Living Dummy and the Gnomes from Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes – with whimsical adventure. The poster reveals many more of the creatures that will appear in the films. Based on a shot at the 1:20 mark of the trailer, it looks like there will be many more references to classic books from 90s childhoods. Director Rob Letterman (Shark Tale) has had plenty of experience working on family films, to varying degrees of success, including Monsters Vs. Aliens (2009) and Gulliver’s Travels (2010), the latter of which also starred Black.
Black’s indie comedy, The D Train, failed to make much of a splash with audiences and so the actor is in need of a hit. The family adventure nature of Goosebumps and the fact that he recently finished production on Kung Fu Panda 3 should put him back on the right track.
Goosebumps is set to be released on October 16, 2015. You can check out the trailer below.
