Rob Thomas’s Veronica Mars movie, based on the popular 2004-07 TV series about high school sleuth Veronica Mars, just got another returnee cast member signed on to reprise her role as quirky Gia Goodman, daughter of wealthy baseball team owner Woody Goodman. Krysten Ritter recently tweeted the news describing her excitement over the shoot and adding that it will be “very juicy.” Thomas will be writing the script for the movie alongside Diane Ruggiero, who wrote some of the episodes for the series.
The Veronica Mars film has been gaining buzz not only for its returning cast including lead role/producer Kristen Bell, Tina Majorino, Percy Daggs III, Chris Lowell, Francis Capra, and rumors of Leighton Meester coming back as Carrie Bishop, but also for the way it was funded. Ritter calls it “revolutionary” in her tweet about the shoot. Thomas used a Kickstarter campaign, a method usually used by independent filmmakers, to fund the studio project (the cult TV show was produced by Warner Bros.).
Veronica Mars film broke its $2 million goal in less than 11 hours- a record for Kickstarter. The project is now at about $5.7 million. Thomas’s use of the crowd funding website has raised a few eyebrows considering his status as a well-established producer and Warner Bros. involvement with the upcoming film (though it has been mentioned that WB will be aiding mostly in distribution), but founders of the site see nothing wrong with celebrity-backed films such as Veronica Mars and, more recently Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here, joining the platform, seeing it as a way to spread awareness about Kickstarter and its projects. That’s good news for Thomas, who described Kickstarter as the “one shot to see a Veronica Mars movie.”
Shooting is set to begin this summer and the film is set to release in 2014.
