‘Verity’ Brings Colleen Hoover Into Darker Territory With Psychological Thriller Adaptation

The first trailer for Verity has officially arrived, introducing audiences to a darker psychological side of Colleen Hoover’s storytelling. Largely known for emotional romance dramas, Hoover’s bestselling 2018 novel, Verity, is now being adapted into a suspense-driven thriller starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. The teaser trailer reveals a tense psychological mystery centered on Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired to complete the unfinished books of famous author Verity Crawford after a mysterious accident leaves her incapacitated. As Lown moves into the Crawford home, she begins uncovering disturbing secrets hidden inside Verity’s unpublished manuscript.

The footage leans heavily into an atmosphere of dimly lit hallways, fragments of memories, and unsettling intimacy. A tone shift from Hoover;s previous adaptations into something more aligned with psychological horror and erotic thrillers. The trailer suggests a film that thrives less on jump scores and more on psychological tension, allowing uncertainty to become part of the horror.

The film is directed by Micheal Showalter and written by Nick Antoscas. Hathaway stars as Verity Crawford, while Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh and Hartnett portrays Jermy Crawford, Verity’s Husband. Behind the senses, Amazon MGM studios is producing the project, and continuing its investment in literary based projects with established fan bases. Hoover herself is also attached as a producer, reinforcing the film’s connection to the original novel.

At its core, Verity is a story about obsession, authorship and the fear of not truly knowing the people closest to you. In literary terms, the narrative functions like an unreliable manuscript unfolding in real time. Truth becomes unstable. Desider blending with manipulation. The house itself almost behaves like a character. Filled with hidden rooms, unfinished sentences, and emotional decay.

The project reflects Hollywood’s continued interest in adapting bestselling novels with build-on online audiences, particularly those fielded by Book-Tok and digital reading communities. Although, Verity also represents something larger, the evolution of Colleen Hoover adaptation beyond romance and into prestige psychological thrillers. That tonal expansion could reshape how studios view commercially successful authors.

In the end, Verity feels less like a traditional adaptation and more like a test of how modern literary projects can transform into a cinematic platform. If the trailer is any indication, the film is only pulling audiences deeper into the horrors of uncertainty.
