Vera Farmiga is set to join Mark Wahlberg to lead an Apple Studios untitled feature that will be directed and written by Stephen Chbosky.
The film is inspired by the 2023 German flick Weekend Rebels, a sports comedy-drama directed by Marc Rothemund, which was based on the true story of Mirco and Jason von Juterzcenka. The original story centers around “a father and his autistic son, who wants to find a favorite Premier League soccer club and makes his father take him to see every single team so he can decide.” It is rumored that this Chbosky version will center around the NBA because of The SpringHill Company being one of the main producers.
LeBron James, Jamal Henderson, and Spencer Beighley will produce under SpringHill with SpringHill co-founder Maverick set to executive produce alongside Michelle Wilens from Apple Studios. Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner will produce for Plan B. The project will be created via a partnership with Wiedemann & Berg Film, which produced the original film as well. Quirin Berg and Max Wiedemann will executive produce for the previously mentioned company.
Wahlberg’s latest films include Apple Studios’ The Family Plan (2023), the adapted true story Arthur the King (2024), and this year’s Mel Gibson-directed feature, Flight Risk. He stars in a film, Play Dirty, based on the Richard Stark “Parker” book series, coming out via Prime Video on October 1st, 2025. Farmiga will be seen on the upcoming big screen as Lorraine Warren one last time in the film The Conjuring: Last Rites, which will be released in theaters on September 5th. She has had most recent roles in Tony Goldwyn’s Ezra, the Disney+ series Hawkeye, and the Apple TV+ miniseries Five Days at Memorial, which is based on a true story surrounding the complications that happened at a hospital in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina hit. Farmiga will also star as Bonnie Nettles in the Michael Gallagher-directed biopic, The Leader, later this year.
