‘Venom’ Director Says Level of Violence Will Push Rating to the Limit

It seems that audiences will finally get the Venom character that they have always wanted. Although Venom is set to be released in theaters in less than a month, the official MPAA rating has yet to be established. Ruben Fleischer admits that the reasoning for this could be because the violence of this film will be pushed to the very limit and may need the added freedoms necessary for the viciousness of the content.

Regardless of the rating, fans will know that Venom is a stand-out from the other superhero films of late. In an interview with ComicBook.com at San Diego Comic Con, Fleischer made it clear that Venom aims to remain consistent with the actual comic. Fleischer said, “In the comics, he bites people’s heads off and eats brains. It would be weird to make a movie with Venom if he wasn’t doing that. We tried to honor it as closely as possible. This is definitely a darker, more violent, more vicious Marvel character than I think anyone’s ever seen before.” That said, Fleischer also mentioned that while the DC Universe is synonymous with darker narratives and Marvel with more of the light side, Venom will feel more real-world and grounded in comparison.

While audiences are still waiting for the final MPAA rating, Venom is still slinking into theaters October 5, 2018.
